Italian master of the 18th century in the succession of Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691 - 1765) ROMAN RUINENCAPRICCIO WITH PORTRAITING OF THE DEATH OF SENECA Oil on canvas. 122 x 164 cm. The painting emphasizes large-format, in the sense of a room decoration filling the walls, in which, in addition to the impression of ancient ruin architecture, a narrative, instructive scenery is integrated. Several people wearing antique clothing have gathered on steps and boulders in front of an architectural backdrop to witness the death of the philosopher Seneca. He was forced to commit suicide on the instructions of Nero. The architectural backdrop to this scene shows a mighty column construction with architrave, a double stone arch in the background, with a view of the mountainous landscape, according to tradition, according to which the events took place outside Rome. This combination of ruin capriccio and history can be found several times in Panini's work, for example in the depiction of the "Sermon of an Apostle" (WVZ 350) or with the "Sermon of a Sibyl" (WVZ 422 f.) in a similar, but laterally reversed structure. Thus the influence or workshop succession of Panini is unmistakable, which, as here, already had an impact on the early ruin romanticism. (1240561) (11) Italian School, 18th century, in the following of Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691 - 1765) ROMAN RUIN CAPRICCIO WITH DEPICTION OF THE DEATH OF SENECA Oil on canvas. 122 x 164 cm. Panini often combined ruin capriccios with historic subjects in his oeuvre, for example The Sermon of an Apostle (CR 350) or Sermon of a Sibyl (CR 422 f.) in similar, but inverted composition. The influence of Panini and his workshop is obvious, who already influenced early ruin romanticism.
