Exceptional goodly-sized Maghreb islamic astrolabe in bronze and brass
The mater features three double-sided tympanums and a table at the bottom. The rete contains the positions of 26 stars and a small arc of circle for the Tropic of Capricorn. The back features a shadow square and at the top, the throne is engraved with the maker's signature in 18e century: Muḥammad al-Baṭṭūṭī. The tympanums feature four places of use: Meknes, Tunis, Marrakesh and Mecca. "L’a fabriqué Muḥammad fils d’Aḥmad alBaṭṭūṭī en l’année 1141 de l’hégire " i.e. 1728. About twenty instruments remain from his work.
