The vivid depictions of Merian, whose artistic achievement as mediator of knowledge and understanding of the biblical stories was probably not surpassed by any later illustrator, mostly in strong impressions. - The first 5 and the le. 3 sheets mounted with larger defects at margins. 4 sheets more browned. Several backed tears, 13 sheets at the end laterally with brown stain. Ldr. brittle, back renewed, the original Ldr. mounted, mirror new. - Well-known Merian bible. With copper title, 2 engraved half-titles and 233 copper engravings in the text. Contemporary leather (spine renewed, clasps missing). Beginning and ending with bigger edge damages (repaired). 4 sheets severely browned, somewhat stained and foxing, few repaired tears. 13 sheets at the end with brown stain. Pastedown renewed.
