Calligraphy talismanic roll
in a frame probably by Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (1922 - 2019)
Polychrome and gold pigments on antelope skin, mirror inlay and coloured glass
Iran, 19th and 20th century
This magical calligraphy painted on antelope skin is composed of squares decorated with multiple inscriptions arranged in geometric patterns. These calligraphic exercises were rolled up in small amulets worn to protect their owner. According to the collector, even though the piece is unsigned, the frame in marquetry of mirror and coloured glass is said to be a work by the famous Iranian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, many of whose works are inspired by the traditional aina-kari technique.
