VARIETIES Magazine. Surrealism in 1929. Brussels, June 1929. In-8, paperback, illustrated cover: preserved in a modern red canvas box. Famous special issue of the Brussels magazine Variétés devoted to Surrealism in 1929 by André Breton and Louis Aragon. Texts by René Crevel, Robert Desnos (pre-initial edition of The Night of loveless night), Paul Éluard, Sigmund Freud (important text on humour), E.L.T. Mesens, Paul Nougé, Benjamin Péret, Raymond Queneau, André Thirion... Aragon and Breton gave there The Jesuit Treasure. Illustrations by Max Ernst, Picabia, René Magritte, Man Ray, Yves Tanguy... An important set of original documents is attached, including four autograph manuscripts of texts reproduced in the magazine: - René CREVEL, À l' heure où l' écriture se dénoue. Signed autograph manuscript, 7 ff. in-folio; - Paul ÉLUARD, L'Art sauvage. Signed autograph manuscript, 3 ff. in-4 ; - Benjamin PÉRET, Les Végétations factices. Autograph manuscript, 2 1/3 ff. in-4 [published under the title: O pierre chargée: titre et nom de l'auteur de la main d'André Breton] ; - Raymond QUENEAU, Quand l'esprit.... Autograph manuscript, 5 ff. in4 on ruled paper; - Henri MANUEL, Photograph of Musidora lying down, original print mounted on cardboard with stamp and signature of the photographer and large autograph signature of Musidora on the print. Two photographs of Illek & Paul taken in Prague on 17 May 1935 during the performance of the Jesuit Treasure at the Novè divadlo [New Theatre]; - Paul NOUGÉ, two signed autograph letters addressed to André Breton 10 August 1928 and 23 December 1932, envelopes preserved. In the first, Nougé apologizes for his delay: "Nadja touched me to the point that I thought I was doing well by delaying writing to you a little. I was afraid of betraying, by a clumsiness whose effects I have only too often seen, something strangely intimate and pure [...].
