Roman 1st-2nd cent. A.D..
Marble. H. 33.4 cm. W. 26.2 cm. D. 16.8 cm
Small seated statue of a woman clad in a sleeved chiton and cloak, who thanks to the lion crouching on the floor to her right is identifiable as Cybele, a mother and nature goddess originally from Phrygia. The raised left lower arm probably supported a sceptre. The right hand, only part of which has been preserved, probably held a phiale for libations. The profiled sides of the throne are sculpted to look like a chair frame. Reverse smoothed. Votive offering. Condition: Preserved except for the head, two-thirds of the left arm, the right hand, upper edge of the backrest and front corner of the rectangular base. Edges of the base slightly worn.
Formerly priv. coll. S. Rosenbaum-Kroeber, Ascona.
