Nasa. LARGE FORMAT. Extraordinary view of the mystic celestial mountain "Mystic Mountain" captured by the HUBBLE Space Telescope. This whimsical mountain peak, surrounded by clouds, resembles a bizarre landscape from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, even more dramatic than fiction, captures the chaotic activity at the top of a pillar of gas and dust, three light years high, which is being eaten away by the bright light of nearby bright stars. The pillar is also attacked from the inside, as the nascent stars buried within it send out jets of gas that can be seen to flow from the towering peaks. This turbulent cosmic peak is in a tumultuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7500 light years away in the southern constellation of Carina. Burning radiation and rapid winds (flow of charged particles) from the super-hot nascent stars in the nebula shape and compress the pillar, causing new stars to form within it. Currents of hot ionized gas can be seen flowing off the ridges of the structure, and veils of gas and dust, illuminated by starlight, float around its towering peaks. The densest parts of the pillar are resistant to radiation erosion. Inside this dense mountain are young stars. You can see long jets of gas firing in opposite directions from the pedestal at the top of the image. Another pair of jets can be seen on another peak near the centre of the image. These jets, (known respectively as HH 901 and HH 902), are signs of the birth of new stars and are launched by discs of gas and dust swirling around the young stars, allowing matter to slowly accrete onto the stellar surfaces.Period chromogenic print.
