François-Henri SCHNEIDER (1851-XXth).
Views of Hanoi and Haiphong between 1888 and 1895.
Two Italian-style cardboard albums (18.5x28 cm), containing about 60 albumen prints pasted with views, scenes and types of Hanoi and Haiphong. (Dimensions per print: 16.5x23 cm).
Active in Indochina from 1888 to 1918, François-Henri Schneider is best known as a publisher-printer in rue Paul Bert in Hanoi and as the creator of the Imprimerie d'Extrême-Orient. But, above all, he was the first photographer to settle in Hanoi, as early as 1888, just before Pierre Dieulefils and Raphaël Moreau .
In his advertisements, he boasted that he owned three thousand pictures and that he was "the most important collection in Indochina" (1901). However, few of his photographs have - to date - been identified. He generally did not sign his works and his archives have not reached us.
All these images are located. These archives date from 1888 to 1895. A very rare photograph taken in the workshop "Clicherie de l'Imprimerie Schneider de Hanoï" and a view of the buildings of the "Imprimerie Schneider" make it possible to attribute all these two albums to their author.
Views of Hanoi, Haïphong, Tonkin: quays, streets, market, 14th July parades, parades, festivals, architecture, hospitals, Red River, Navy, arsenal, Russian sailors, fishermen, elephants... Non insolated prints.
