A WOOD NETSUKE OF TEKKAI SENNIN

Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A spirited old carving depicting Tekkai Sennin holding his staff upside down in one hand, the other held close to his face, as he looks upwards towards the heavenly skies. He wears a loose robe, showing his belly and emaciated rib cage, and a hyotan (double gourd) is attached to his obi. The eyes are inlaid in dark horn. Good himotoshi through the back. HEIGHT 8.5 cm Condition: Good, worn condition. Fine patina. The feet are repaired. Provenance: British collection.
