"Typus Orbis Terrarum". 1587 Engr. 35 x 48 cm, gilt decorated and hand-coloured (central folding and tear without loss). Framed. First state of Ortelius' third and last world map, recognisable by the four medallions in the corners with classical texts from Cicero and Seneca. Based upon Mercator's map of 1569, Gastaldi's map of 1561, and Diego Gutierrez' portolan map of the coastlines of the Atlantic. From an edition of Ortelius "Theatrum orbis terrarum" published between 1592 and 1613 in Antwerp by J.B. Vrients or the Plantin Press.
