Circle of PAST, Crispijn Medallion with farmer defending his land. Antwerp ca. 1570-1620 Engraving, 15,1 cm diameter, laid paper, unsigned (laid down on paper mount). A farmer holding a club to hold off a soldier holding a sword and dagger. Surrounded with text margin with French and Dutch commentary on the image "Schermer, Schermt soo ghy wilt, en cunt gheen gewelt schouwen/Want met boeren slagen moeten wy sfelt houwen. Fencing, fencing if you want, violence cannot escape / because with village blows we had to hold the field". Part of a larger series of satirical medallion engravings (12 pl). Although unsigned, the style of engraving, typology and typography is similar to comparable medallion engravings by Crispijn de Passe. Ref. G.
