Albert Clomp took the interpretation of the Dutch landscape with cows, shepherds and farmhouses on canals as idyllic Arcadia on the subject of his pictures. Related pictures were created by Paulus Potter (1625–1654) and the younger Adriaen van de Velde (1636–1672), especially in their early days. A soft sunset dominates the clouds in the sky, in front of which the trees are dark. A little light fall on the spotted red-brown cow and the shepherd's face in the foreground, while the other animals and the foreground are already largely in the shade. In the background a river runs along, in which an island lies, on the horizon you can see a church tower. Built from horizontal and vertical elements, his composition conveys great calm.
