The painting is stylistically at the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance. It shows the Lamentation of Jesus not mentioned in the Bible after the descent from the cross and before the burial. John the Evangelist supports the body of the dead Jesus, the grieving Maria gently grabs the head of her dead son and bends her head close to his, Maria Magdalena raises Jesus' left hand to kiss it. Golgotha can be seen in the background on the right, Jerusalem on the left. The cross of Christ appears again large behind the group to invite the viewer to the prayer.
The figure of St. Johannes also appears on an altar from the Pieter Coecke van Alsts school (1502?1550), which was auctioned in Vienna in 2010.
