The grandson of the famous Jan Brueghel 18 years old moved to Italy and settled in Rome, where he developed into a sought-after still life painter of flowers and fruits. The figures often painted other artists in his pictures.
Michelangelo Cerquozzi was one of the Bamboccianti, the artists in the area and the successor to Pieter van Laers (1599–1642), who depicted the simple folk life on the streets of Rome without makeup.
A young, beautiful, half-naked woman behind a balustrade and under an ivy tendril lifts up a golden vase filled with flowers. The cabinet piece places the viewer in an ideal sphere of youthful beauty and abundance of nature. The topic was also dealt with in large format pictures by various artists, for example also by the younger Christian Berentz (1658-1722), who also worked in Rome.
