CONSALVI (Ercole). Letter signed with 4 autograph words as Secretary of State of the Pope, addressed to the Archbishop of Paris, Alexandre-Angélique de Talleyrand-Périgord. Rome, November 25, 1820. 1 p. in-folio, in Italian. "I sentimenti di rispetto che nutro verso la Eminenza Vostra mi fanno incontrare con vero piacere la occasione della ricorrenza del Divino Nascimento per avanzarle l'augurio di ogni felicità. Prego Vostra Eminenza di gradire questo mio officio unito alle proteste del mio profond'ossequio, mentre le bacio umilissimamente le mani... "Translation: "The feelings of respect that I have for Your Eminence make me seize with real pleasure the occasion of the feast of the Divine Birth to present you with my wishes of happiness. I ask Your Eminence to accept this duty, together with the protests of my profound reverence, as I very humbly kiss his hands.... "NEGOTIATOR AND SIGNATOR OF THE 1801 PAPAUTE AGREEMENT, THE CONSALVI CARDINAL was then carrying out a remarkably effective diplomatic and political action. -- ALEXANDRE-ANGÉLIQUE DE TALLEYRAND-PÉRIGORD, former archbishop of Reims and deputy of the clergy at the Estates General, refused the civil constitution of the clergy and then the concordatory regime, and joined Louis XVIII in exile, who made him Grand Chaplain of France. He was then raised to the dignity of Cardinal (1817), and made Archbishop of Paris (1819).
