18th century FRENCH SCHOOL, follower of RAPHAËL The beautiful Jardinière Toile 123 x 83 cm Ancient Restorations The original, a masterpiece from Raphael's Florentine period, signed and dated, is now kept in the Louvre museum. Painted on a poplar panel, it has the same dimensions as our canvas. It probably comes from the collection of Francis I. John Evelyn reported it to Fontainebleau in 1644. It is documented at the Louvre palace in 1650, then at Versailles in 1695, in the medal cabinet in 1709, and finally in Luxembourg in 1766, in the permanent exhibition of the King's paintings open to the public. A copy - which we can understand on canvas, since the original is specified on wood - by Jean Dubois is reported in Fontainebleau to the Emperor's Cabinet in 1731. This room included copies of old paintings as early as 1644. Expert: Cabinet Turquin Put back on sale by crazy auction.
