REGENCY EARLY CHAIR Based on a drawing by Thomas Hope (1769-1831) In mahogany, the back with curved band and openwork X motif adorned with a rosette in the centre, the belt with teeth and the four sabre feet surmounted by an acanthus leaf at the front, trimmed with worn green velvet; small accidents H. 74.5 cm (29 ¼ in.) l. Width: 48 cm (19 in.) A Regency mahogany side chair, after a drawing by Thomas Hope (1769-1831) The elegant design of this chair links it to the work of Thomas Hope (1769-1831). His famous 1807 work "Household Furniture and interior decoration executed from designs by Thomas Hope", was one of the references in interior decoration during the Regency period; it contains a series of engravings representing the interiors of his London residence in Duchess Street which housed his personal collection and that of his brother Henry Philip Hope. In one of the plates illustrating the "Picture Gallery" (see fig. 1), a chair of a model comparable to ours can be seen in the foreground on the left. A chair with the same backrest, attributed to Hope and kept at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge is illustrated in D. Watkin, P. Hewat-Jaboor, "Thomas Hope Regency Designer", 2008, p.372.
