HALF-LUNE CONSOLE LOUIS XVI Stamp of John Baptist II Tilliard In carved and gilded wood, blue turquoise marble top, the belt with openwork decoration of sunflowers inscribed in a frieze of interlacing, decorated with a garland of flowers held by a knotted ribbon, the tapered feet with roughened flutes surmounted by a ring of laurel and acanthus leaves, joined by a spacer with an interlacing motif topped by a cassolette surrounded by a garland of flowers, stamped TILLIARD on the right front jamb. H. 89.5 cm (35 ¼ in.) l. Width: 100 cm (39 ¼ in.) P. W.: 31 cm (12 ¼ in.) John Baptist II Tilliard, received master in 1752 A Louis XVI giltwood half moon console, stamped by Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard Jacques Jean-Baptiste Tilliard (1723 - 1798), known as Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard, apprenticed in his father's workshop Aux Armes de France, which he took over in 1766. With his title of "Carpenter of the King's Furniture Store", he gave up carpentry in the building for turn to carpentry in seats. The carved ornaments of our console, of extreme delicacy, their great variety and their arrangement testify to the sensitivity of this master of the Transition style, which he applies here in a purer Louis XVI style. We find here the finesse of the naturalistic garlands of flowers that characterize him applied on the frieze ornaments or the ring that tightens the top of the feet. A comparable console is illustrated in P. Jullian, "Le style Louis XVI", p.58 ill.3.
