Probably Spanish School around 1700 St. Anthony of Padua (Lisbon 1195 - Padua 1231) and St. Teresa of Avila (1515- 1582) Pair of gilded, polychromed wooden statuettes with estofado decoration and faces, feet and hands in polychromed elephant ivory. Dim: 34 and 37 cm on gilded wooden bases Small chips in the polychromy This pair of private devotional statuettes represents Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus, reformer of the Carmelite Order canonized in 1622 and named patroness of Spain in 1627 as well as Saint Anthony of Padua, Franciscan friar, renowned preacher canonized in 1232 and became patron saint of Portugal. These iconographies were widely spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula and the colonies. If the combination of polychrome wood and ivory rather evokes colonial production, the quality of the decoration a estofado and the delicacy of the faces and drapes suggest the work of an important Spanish workshop.
