Colours and Ink on silk. China. Possibly Ming Period (1368-1644) "Bird on blossoming plum tree." Following models of the 10th century artist Mei Hsing-Sze. Seal. Album leaf. 32,2 x 20,2 cm. The appeal of Southern Song academic flower and bird painting, exemplified here, derives from careful realism; studied, selective presentation; and genuine affection lavished upon the small and colorful things of the garden. A similar 12th-century example is preserved at the MET Museum in New York.
