COHAN GEORGE M.: (1878-1942) American Entertainer, Playwright, Composer & Lyricist, the subject of the biographical musical film Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). D.S., George M Cohan, seven pages, 4to, n.p., November 1926. The typescript document is a memorandum of agreement between Cohan and Edward Belasco, Fred Butler and Gerhold O. Davis, co-partners of the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles, in which Cohan seeks to grant a license to the theatre owners 'to perform and represent the…..dramatic composition' entitled Yellow for an exclusive run at the Belasco Theatre with a first-class company for the theatrical season 1926-27 and 'continuing as long as the aforesaid play may be a financial success', further agreeing that Cohan will receive 10% of the gross weekly box office receipts, with a minimum guaranty of not less than $750 per week, and that Belasco and his partners 'will announce the name of Margaret Vernon as author of the….dramatic composition in all advertising and printed matter used in the exploitation of said play', and that they will not alter the manuscript.
