CARTEL D'APPLIQUE Violet wood, gilt bronze, enamel
Dial and movement signed Decovigny à Paris
H. 140 cm, W. 47 cm, D. 27 cm
This elegant wall lamp displays a rich ornamentation of chased and gilt bronze. The console is adorned at the corners with female masks emerging from an acanthus leaf. The cartel, with leafy hooves framing a lyre-playing love above a triple motif of shells and vegetal scrolls, features scraps from the corners decorated with garlands. The pediment, crowned with another love, echoes that of the base and makes the object easier to read. The Roman numerals, inscribed in white enamelled scrolled cartouches, stand out from a flat, sculpted Amati bronze dial. Noël de Covigny was a watchmaker in Paris. Author of repeating watch movements and clocks, he was active in the 17th and 18th centuries. Two watches of his hand are kept in the Fine Arts Museum of the Petit Palais in Paris.
