PAIR OF CHENETS France, Louis XIV period, early 18th century
Gilt bronze
H. 28,5 cm, L. 14,5 cm
This pair of finely chiseled and gilt bronze andirons rests on a tripod base with scrolled edges and acanthus leaves framing antique profile medallions topped with a shell and a garland of laurel on an amati background. The scrolled forms of the base are echoed in the upper part where three female busts in sheaths on brackets encircle a jar decorated with gadroons, stylised flowers and crosses.
Fully adhering to the aesthetic promoted by André-Charles Boulle, it is possible to find other examples of these fires in a plate commissioned by Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-1774) entitled Differens desseins de Feux ou Grilles pour Cheminées (
Different Designs of Lights or Fireplace Grates) (Fig. 1).
