PORTRAIT OF ANNE LOUIS VICTOR RAOUL, DUKE OF MONTMORENCY (1790-1862). Oil on canvas, monogrammed EM lower left and dated 1825. 65 x 54 cm. According to a family tradition and an old handwritten label on the back of the frame, our painting has long been attributed to Nathalie Labouchère, née Mallet (1813-1884), or to her husband Antoine Pierre Labouchère (1807-1873). In view of the dates of birth, the monogram EM and the date 1825, the current descendant and owner suggests that it is more likely to be attributed to Emilie Mallet. Moreover, our painting has been passed down over several generations to members of the Mallet family: Jules, Charles, Raoul, Philippe and finally Bernard Mallet who sold it to Drouot in 1999. The label on the back of the frame gives some details about the model: Enlisted as a hussar in 1807, Officer of the Emperor's ordinance and one of his chamberlains, patented Colonel under the Restoration...................................................................................................................................................
