"Allow a man attached to your family for the most real bonds, those of gratitude, to deplore with you the horrible catastrophe that has just struck you. Held myself in my room by an indisposition, I could only send for news of the marshal, whose illness I did not know until yesterday. Poor marshal. I had dinner with him eight days ago at the President's house - and I wished him, at the age of 80, the ball and chain of Turenne or Berwick. God disposed of him differently ...
