"Catherine de Medici left Vincennes to lead the king to the castle of Rambouillet not far from the battlefield. The Duke of Guise went there immediately with all his army officers. Introduced with them into the room where the king stood, he asked if it would please their Majesties to grant him a moment of audience.
Jesus, my cousin," replied Catherine, "what do you speak of an audience? Do you doubt the pleasure the king and I would take in hearing you?" (Livret du Salon, 1836).
