François de Lorraine, Duke of Guise, presents to Charles IX the warriors who distinguished themselves at the battle of Dreux on December 19, 1562 Black stone on paper, glued on a paper mounted on canvas, put in the tile, a signature "A. Deveria" at the bottom right. H. 48 cm - W. 96,5 cm Frame: H. 61 cm - W. 106 cm HVS Traces of humidity, restorations. Provenance: Probably the sale after the death of Tony Johannot on 26 and 27 November 1852, lot 46, Paris, Me Bonnefons. Related work: The painting by Alfred Johannot kept in the Louis-Philippe Museum of the Château d'Eu, exhibited at the Salon of 1836 (n°1038). "Catherine de Medici left Vincennes to lead the king to the castle of Rambouillet not far from the battlefield. The Duke of Guise went there immediately with all his army officers. Introduced with them into the room where the king stood, he asked if it would please their Majesties to grant him a moment of audience. Jesus, my cousin," replied Catherine, "what do you speak of an audience? Do you doubt the pleasure the king and I would take in hearing you?" (Livret du Salon, 1836).
