The Flowers of Evil. Paris, Chicken Malassis and De Broise, 1857. In-12, ivy-green morocco, triple cold fillet framing the dishes, back with nerves decorated in the same way, gilt slices on witnesses, preserved cover, half morocco shirt with small overlaps and case (P. L. Martin). ORIGINAL EDITION with title in red ink. 248 pp. + [2] ff. (table). EXAMPLE OF THE FIRST ISSUE showing the pagination error on p. 45 (numbered 44), as well as the repeated error in the two current titles of pp. 31 & 108 (where it is written "Les Feurs du mal") and INCLUDING THE SIX CONDEMNED PIECES: "Les Bijoux", "Le Lethé", "À celle qui est trop gaie", "Lesbos", "Femmes damnés" (I) & "Les Métamorphoses du vampire". Copy coated, like those who were mutilated of the six condemned pieces, of the cover of the second edition announcing "Les Fleurs du mal, by Charles Baudelaire, in-12.... 3 fr", which seems to be confirmed by the correction made during this first printing of the mistake found in the last stanza of p. 12 ("s'embardissant" instead of "s'embardissent"). Back of shirt burnished and pages washed, but BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THIS ORIGINAL EDITION OF THE FLOWERS OF EVIL. Vicar, I, 341-343; Carteret, I, 118-123 (where the two editions of the cover are reproduced); Pichois, Dictionnaire Baudelaire, 217-218.
