After Italy and Egypt, Majorelle discovered Morocco in 1917. He was immediately seduced by Tangier, a privileged residence for Western artists.
However, tempted by the south, he moved to Marrakech where he was received and accepted by both the French residents and the local notables.
Majorelle likes to paint the souks, but he wants to go further, always further south, towards unknown lands. Thus, in 1919, he made his first trip to the Atlas Mountains, following the caravan route. He will make many stays there fascinated by the kasbahs, ancestral villages still intact, monumental fortresses illustrating the power of the local lords.
