BUST KONGO-MBONA, TUMBA A KONGO-MBONA FIGURE ANGOLA Height: 28 cm. (11 in.) US$5,500-7,600 PROVENANCE Belgian private collection EXHIBITION Germany, Moers, Sparkasse Moers, Kunst und Kulturen ferner Völker, 19 August - 7 September 1984 BIBLIOGRAPHY Sparkasse Moers, Kunst und Kulturen ferner Völker, Moers, 1984, p. 17, No. 11 The material used for these funerary statues came from two stone quarries. The sculpture was roughly carved on site in soft stone to facilitate transport to the workshop. It was then reworked with an adze and a knife, as in woodcarving. The soft stone did not facilitate the conservation of these statues placed outside and it is therefore not uncommon to find them today in a fragmentary state. Originally, this sculpture was probably in a sitting position, as a tailor, on a rectangular base. The asymmetrical composition is a singular and particularly striking feature of these commemorative statues. Today, different styles and workshops can be distinguished. This fgure is distinguished by the expression emanating from his face, which is reinforced by the posture of the bent arm resting on the fanc. It is also distinguished by the representation of a skullcap, a hairline and the wearing of a necklace decorated with a large pearl. Other examples of this workshop are currently kept in the collections of the Museum aan de Stroom (inv. no. AE.619), the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren (inv. no. EO.1955.45.8), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. no. 1978.412.573) and the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal (inv. no. AM-153-1). To bid, please consult the section " Sale information ".
