SMALL VILLAGE SCENE
Nayarit Culture, Western Mexico
Protoclassical, 100 pre-250 AD.
H. 13 cm - W. 14 cm
Ceramic with light beige slip and brick-red ornamental paint
On a square base, a small house with two openings topped by a
classic roof decorated with red paint with repetitive zigzags. Four
characters sitting outside watching a woman cook
under the hut. Outside, presence of a small jar and a dog.
(Good condition, visible surface wear, acc.)
The models of houses with their inhabitants grouped in representation
give us a glimpse into the lives of the men of Mexico.
Western, almost 2000 years ago.
These are generally single-family homes in which the
men were represented in daily activities or
ceremonial.
The area around Ixtlan del Rio, south-west of the Nayarit, is considered to be
most of the time as the place of origin of these dwellings.
They come from funerary chambers which are accessed by
deep wells.
