CHARACTER CHORRERA, BAHÍA ENV. 1000-400 AV. Height: 28.1 cm. (11 in.) $20000-24000 PROVENANCE Collection Alain Brisset, Angoulême, acquired in 1982 Galerie Mermoz, Paris, acquired from the latter Important European private collection, acquired from the latter in 2004 CHORRERA FIGURE, BAHÍA Distinguished by the billowing broad shoulders and contemplative expression, the face with narrow slit eyes and mouth, solely clothed in a domed cap ornamented with a swirling motif. Chorrera ceramics derive from the earlier traditions of Valdivia and Machalilla, ca. 1000-400 B.C. They are distinguished by emphatic symmetry, a harmonious yet dramatic play of rounded planes and lustrous burnished surfaces. With imposing bodies and imperturbable facial expressions Chorrera efigies emanate the same quiet power of early Anatolian Kiliya fgurines. To bid, please visit the "Sales Information" section.
