ƒ PENDENTIF-PECTORAL COCKED, PARITY, PENINSULA D'AZUERO ENV. 800-1500 AP. Height: 14 cm. (5½ in.) $11000-16000 PROVENANCE Hélène (Leloup) and Henri Kamer (1927-1992), Kamer & Cie, Paris Collection James and Marilynn Alsdorf, Chicago Sotheby's, New York, November 23, 1998, lot 69 Private American collection, acquired at this sale EXHIBITION Chicago, The Arts Club of Chicago, High Culture in the Americas before 1500, November 15-December 31, 1982 BIBLIOGRAPHY McNear, E., High Culture in the Americas before 1500, 1982, Chicago, p. 38, fg. 85 COCK GOLD PECTORAL Of square form, repousse with a standing saurian deity with legs bent, arms raised and hands terminating in alligator heads, the face with toothy grin and headdress with sharply curving double-headed saurian, similar creatures emanating from the body; pierced with four pair of suspension holes, for attachment to a garment. It has been suggested that the pervasive crested alligator imagery in Coclé art may actually be more pertinent to iguanas, which have been associated with rulership in the ethnographic literature because of their ability to walk on their hind legs and their prominently crested heads, see Jones, 2012: p. 125.
