Maria Helena VIEIRA DA SILVA
COMPOSITION, 1953
"Vieira da Silva's painting is not a window on nature but a kind of maze, a labyrinth where everything is constructed, without beginning or end, as if it were necessary to make our certainties waver. We contemplate this universe of networked spaces in which beings and places seem inextricably linked in a perfect dialogue with the current era where countries and cities are articulated in a kind of spatial framework. This multiplicity of exchanges and directions, of knowledge and cultures offers the viewer who walks through it many comings and goings, as if each painting were staging the permanent theatre of our lives. There is no certainty in this work, open to the possible, except a promise of freedom"
