Doctor to the Duke of Orleans, Nicolas-Gabriel Clerc went to Russia by order of Louis XV and stayed there from 1759 to 1777, gathering a great deal of information on the trade, customs, population and administration of this country.
The China of Confucius and Emperor Yu the Great (2298-2198 B.C.), famous for its reforms, serves here as a framework for him to set out his own moral and political doctrines. The tables provide statistical data on the different provinces of the Chinese Empire.
