Dated PÉPÉDIL and Armenian letter (Caucasus), late 19th century
A jagged, anthracite and marine abrasive field hosts a typical Pérédil carpet decoration. Thus six "Kindjals" with ram's horn-shaped guard frame nine small ivory octagonal medallions with geometric entomological shapes. They are completed by three central 'Kotchaks' and twenty-two stylised volatiles in a row. Flowers, small "S", Medes stars, gems and insects complete the decoration. The main ivory border is made up of stylised cruciform flowers placed on branches, and is flanked by two counter-borders, a rose with a two-coloured undulating ribbon and another sky with polychrome flowers. An ivory cartouche indicates its date of manufacture in 1903 and the combined Armenian letter attests to the origin of the weaver or the recipient of the carpet.
