Except very rare KUM-KAPU carpet (or Kum-Kapi, which means "Gate of Sand" in Turkish), (Asia Minor, Turkey), late 19th century
Wool velvet, warps and weft in natural silk, the animals and branches in pearl grey colours being made of silvery metal thread oxidized by time.
Turkish knot, density about 50 knots/cm2
Signed four times, Plum
background decorated with Chu (clouds of Chinese origin) and animals, brocaded with silver metal threads, moving in the middle of lotus flowers and various polychrome foliage and floral compositions.
Ivory main border with stems of blooming flowers and polychrome leaves, surrounded by two anthracite counter-borders with flowers.
The carpet is signed by Hagop Kapukian and Zareh Benjamian, with two initials in two corners of the main ivory border, one on the left, the other on the right, and an Armenian inscription in the blue flower touching the inner counter-borders, in the centre, on either side of the carpet, in symmetry. Beautifully fresh colours. Beautifully preserved. Museum quality piece

These carpets were woven by Armenians approximately between 1890 and 1910, but the name Kum-Kapu is used to designate Ottoman carpets of very high quality and fineness.
