Magnificent HÉRIZ entirely woven of silk (Persia), mid 19th century
On a tobacco field and in the middle of polychrome floral scrolls, emerging from baluster vases, stands out a very dreamlike decoration in the centre of which one can see a door at mihrab, symbolizing the door to paradise, where a weeping willow, symbol of eternal life, unfurls under an oil lamp, two suns (supreme beings) and a lintel with Abjad scriptures. The gate of paradise is guarded by two dragons/chimeras basking in limbo. The main mihrab, in arabesques, of this prayer carpet, with ivory scroll vaults, is supported by two columns, supported by two lions. Two marine counter-borders with garlands of multicoloured flowers enclose the main brick with interlacing flowery branches.
175 x 140cm
Technical characteristics: Velvet, warp, weft and silk fringes. Very original prayer mat. Density: Approx. 10000 knots per dm2. Qq oxidation and slight natural wear.
