18K (750) gold vinaigrette guilloché in a rectangular shape, the lid adorned with the "Mane in fede" motif in an oval surrounded by blue enamel. French work, hallmark for Paris 1798-1809. Dimensions: about 3 x 2 cm. Gross weight: 17.6 g
The vogue for vinaigrettes or cassolettes developed from the 16th century and reached its peak in the 18th century. Essential accessories for ladies constrained in their corset, prone to fainting, they allowed them to regain their senses after having breathed in the perfumes of small impregnated tampons kept under a pierced compartment. These small objects took on a variety of shapes and were adorned with an infinite number of ornaments. The one we offer has a refined guilloche decoration and a delicately carved cameo representing the motif Mane in fede, with the detail here carved of a wedding ring.
