Notes :
1. If the year 2019 saw the triumph of Đinh Văn Dần with our record auction of a panel for 52,000€ (cf. sale of 09/12/2019, lot 169), this artist remains nevertheless unknown and little documented. Some people announce him as a pupil of the southern school of Thủ Dầu Một not far from Saigon / Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville. However, among his four works that have appeared on the market, one is located in Hanoi; the panel mentioned above showed a sugar loaf mountain typical of the karst landscapes of northern Vietnam. Others evoke what would be his pseudonym/artist name, Bac Pho Than, which, for the moment, has not been demonstrated and which, moreover, does not appear on any of his known works.
2. The fact remains that this artist impresses by his mastery of the art of lacquerware, and so he is on familiar terms with the proponents of the genre, first and foremost Phạm Hầu (1903-1995), which he challenges by attacking the "classics" that are "La Pagode Thay" or, as here, "The Red Fish of Abundance".
3. The artist plunges the spectator into the bottom of a river. He can thus contemplate five goldfish striking realism with their fins that are both translucent and vibrant as if crossed by water. The aquatic flora is also rich and the species clearly identifiable. The chromatic palette, mainly made up of a monochrome of red ochres, testifies to a perfect mastery of his art.
