Hiếu Đệ, of his real name Nguyễn Tánh Đệ, was born on August 1, 1935 in Phan Thiết. Settled in Saigon at the age of 15, he attended first the school Huỳnh Khương Ninh, then the Lasan Tabert school before entering the College of Fine Arts in Gia đình from which he graduated in 1960. It was then that he was taken as a political prisoner and sent to a reeducation camp where he confirmed that he was the author of a cartoon depicting three soldiers on a swing that caused great controversy. Upon his release in 1989, he moved to the United States, to Hollan, Michigan, where he died on 16 April 2009. In addition to his cartoon mentioned above, he is known for a series of lacquer paintings on the theme of heroes. He collaborated with many artists and writers such as Vương Đình Thư... 2. This work marks by the fineness of its details, by the richness of its chromatic palette, by the combination of the three techniques (lacquer, mother-of-pearl application and eggshell application) and by its composition. In this, it bears witness to an artist with a mastered art and could therefore be qualified as a masterpiece of his production.
