Copper engraving of two plates on one sheet after Antonio Tempesta. 30.5 x 69.2 cm. (1688). Wüthrich IV, 83 and 84, Schuchard from 100 or 101.
Bird's-eye view of the city of Rome by Matthäus Merian from the "Topographia Italiae", which Merian published in 1688 with texts by Martin Zeiller. Perfect impression with narrow margins. Vertical folding traces, partly with retouched repairs, somewhat stained, in the left half a carefully closed vertical tear, margins all around, vertical folding and crease marks partly repaired, further small preservation flaws, in the general impression still good. Included by Johannes Blaeu from the Atlas van Loo (1596-1673) the etching "Circus Maximus Le Grande Cirque, a Rome".
