"The Landscape Painter on the Journey" (The painter J. F. Kirchner sitting on the bank of the Danube). Etching. 13.7 x 19.1 cm. 1814. Jahn 131 II. The journey on foot had established itself in the late 18th century as motif of bourgeois experience. "In the Romantic period, artists and writers discovered hiking as an end in itself, i.e. with the aim of building on experiences of nature and being inspired by them" (Anja Kregeloh: "Vom Felleisen zum Trekkingrucksack - Gepäck für Fußreisen" in: Reisebegleiter. More than just luggage. Edited by Claudia Selheim, cat. Germanic National Museum. Nuremberg 2010, p. 61). The artist was also well aware that at the same time he gained insight into his own human nature. This self-confidence is also evident in the numerous self-portraits and portraits of artist colleagues that can be found in the travel pictures of the time. The present portrait of Johann Jakob Kirchner (1788-1837), who was born in Nuremberg, sitting and drawing on the Danube is one of the most beautiful portraits of friendship in the field of Romantic printmaking.- Very excellent impression with narrow margins around the platemark. A little bit stained, slight signs of age, at the back side small remains of glue and mounting, otherwise very good. Provenance: From the collection Wolfgang von Dallwitz (Lugt 2656).
