Known and unknown worlds. Adventurous journeys. Various editions. 95 works in 60 volumes. With numerous wood engraving illustrations. 24 x 17 cm. Illustrated original linen volumes with gold and black embossing (mostly spine faded and dull; several volumes more heavily rubbed; one volume back cover loose, another with considerable preservation defects). Vienna, Pest and Leipzig, A. Hartleben, 1887-1911. Complete set of the legendary edition except for three volumes, one of the great classic editions of the century and the foundation for the lasting success of the "ingenious scientific romantic" Jules Verne (such an apt characterization of the Hartleben publishing house) in Germany. The launch was marked by the novels From the Earth to the Moon (subtitled Directe Fahrt in 97 Stunden 20 Minuten), Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Miles Under the Sea, Journey around the Earth in 80 Days and Five Weeks in a Balloon, which are still popular today. This extensive series also includes such rare volumes as The Kip Brothers, Der Goldvolkan, Der Pilot von der Donau and Wilhelm Storitz' Geheimnis. - The volumes 29/30 The Discovery of the Earth (in one volume) and 93 The Hunt for the Meteor are missing. All volumes impaired in appearance by sooting, the endpapers mostly with black inking in the margin, which can be removed for the most part; several volumes in the book block slightly waterstained; a few volumes stamped old or with an old hand ownership note; the illustrated front covers well preserved.
