CONDÉ(Louis de Bourbon, prince of). Autograph letter signed "Louis de Bourbon" to the Duke of Longueville. Brussels, December 23rd 1654. 1 p. in-4, address on the back. "He who will read you this letter will speak to you about a matter which I have recommended to you by Fontenay, and as he is in a hurry to serve this person, I implore you to do what is in your power to delay the evil which will be irremediable if it is left to be done beforehand. I will send someone to you the day after tomorrow to tell you when I can see you. At that time, we will examine together the means of getting my amy out of trouble, however I beg you to use all your power to do so... "SCRAMBLED WITH THE REGENT, MAZARIN, THE CARDINAL OF RETZ, AND WITH THE PARLIAMENT, THE PRINCE OF CONDÉ WAS THEN IN THE SERVICE OF PHILIPPE IV OF SPAIN. It was only after the peace of the Pyrenees (1659) that he would obtain the pardon of the royal power and could return to France. BEAU-FRÈRE OF THE PRINCE DE CONDÉ, THE DUC DE LONGUEVILLE, Henri d'Orléans, was descended from Charles V by his ancestor the Count of Dunois, bastard of the Duke Louis d'Orléans. He distinguished himself in the service of the king's armies but took part in the Chalais plot against Richelieu (1626) and then in the Fronde against Mazarin (1649-1650). After his incarceration (with Condé) in 1650, he retired to his government in Normandy where he piously ended his life.
