Virgin Hodighitria of Smolensk
Icon of Central Russian origin from the 18th century. Painted on a wooden panel with a double border.
The Virgin is depicted halfway up the body, holding Christ on her left arm, while in her right hand she shows her son, the Way of Redemption. With his right hand Christ blesses, in his left hand he holds a scroll, symbol of the Logos, the Creator Word.
This type of Hodighitria is attached to the city of Smolensk, according to an icon preserved in the Dormition Cathedral.
The icon is painted on silver leaf enhanced with floral motifs, the palette is mostly composed of Sienna and ochre with light highlights.
The pictorial foliage has some detachments and lacks, especially along the border. It is covered with a highly oxidized varnish. The support is healthy.
