Sophie VIDEGRAIN Year of production: 2019 Material: Installation, fibre-paper from common ivy and raw linen fibre Dimensions: variable Biography, presentation of the artistic approach: Born on 5 March 1969 in Suresnes, Sophie Videgrain lives and works in Normandy. "Between Land Art and Poor Art, between ecology and economy of means, my work seeks to artistically direct the eye towards a concrete source of inspiration, a universal language: Nature. Trees, lianas, leaves, wild or cultivated plants, minerals, snow, ice, smoke, constitute for me a protean and moving palette. The plants that I use are essentially from the local flora and I extract the fiber from some of them. This is the basis of paper making. Paper, which is an integral part of my work, was first created for practical purposes, to record an act, an event, then to transmit an idea and leave a tangible trace. My work strives to leave a tangible trace, the manifest trace of a nature that is currently more fantasized than concrete, with the majority of the world's population living in urban areas. If my approach can be accompanied by an environmental and perhaps pedagogical dimension, it ostensibly tends towards a sensitive and poetic perspective. The plant species I use are often wild and the imponderable laws of their growth force humility. In fact, this approach frees us from too many contingencies, too much waiting, too much speculation. I find myself less shy in this "poor" art, popular without being easy. I also find myself less shy in the gaze of the other who will perceive in my work a fragment of a known element that will make the relation of my intention to his imagination. The emotion is in the gaze of the one who contemplates the object, not in the object itself. To arouse this emotion is also to invoke memory.
