THE HOLY HIERONYMUS IN HIS STUDIES Oil on wood. 44 x 60 cm. In decorative frame. The Church Father in his study in a bright red robe and corresponding headdress. He is sitting behind a table and has his head supported on his right hand, while the index finger of his left hand points to the skull lying in front of him. The skull, together with the candleholder with extinguished flame standing beside it, is a typical vanitas symbol. In front of him on the table are also his glasses, a pair of wick scissors and a small wooden desk with an open book on which the inscription "Timore Dei" can be read. In the background on the left is an elaborately crafted golden clock and on the right a bookshelf with bound volumes, some of which are inscribed with "Liber Sapiencie" and "Vita Christi". Below it, on two attached leather strips on the wall, hang some letters and a comb. Finely detailed painting, in which the light comes in from the left through a partly visible window. Note: The motif was first presented by Joos van Cleve, also in dependence on Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), and repeated by the students in manifold variations. Other painters have also taken up this theme, including Quentin Metsys (1466-1530). Similar depictions can be found in the Prado in Madrid, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, the Museum Stockholm and the National Museums in Berlin.
