HEAD OF AN OLD BEARDED MAN
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
50 x 40 cm.
In decorative splendid frame.
After a direct examination of the work, Barbara and Arnaud Brejon De Lavergnee have confirmed the attribution to Simon Vouet and will include it in their catalogue in progress.
This brilliant study of a painting shows an old man with a white-grey long curly beard, a brown-tanned face and curly hair on the sides of his head. He has his head and eyes turned slightly downwards and is looking attentively at a letter, which is sketchily reproduced at the lower right-hand edge. He is wearing red-brown clothes and is standing in front of a beige-brown hilly background, above which is the bright golden high sky. The light falls from an unknown source from the upper left and illuminates the man's bald head, his right eye area and nose, while the other side of his face remains shadowed. Excellent quality painting for which Brejon De Lavergnee suggests a date around 1625-26. Minor retouching. (1221201) (18)
