IMAGE OF A SIBYLLE
oil on canvas.
98 x 76 cm.
The depiction fits seamlessly into a series of similar pictorial themes of sibyls, but also compositionally similar paintings of female half-figures, such as Saint Cecilia from 1665, a lute player, Mary Magdalene or the Sophonisbe from 1649. The Sibyl, here dressed in courtly fashion with a billowy white sleeve dress and red cloak, holds a tablet on her knees with both hands and at the same time points to the side with her index finger, indicating that the event she prophesied is about to come true. In the fine brush technique typical of the painter, using a delicate sfumato outline. (1221806) (3) (11)
