THE CHRIST CARRIER OF THE CROSS ON THE WAY TO CALVARIENBERG
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
118,5 x 181,5 cm.
Unframed.
Close-up of Christ in brown robe, carrying the heavy cross, a rope around his neck and crown of thorns on his head, which has already left clear traces of blood on his pale face. Christ, with his sad dark eyes, turns to a henchman who, in rear view, can be seen wearing a white shirt rolled up and a beige waistcoat, and who is holding the rope around Christ's neck with his left hand. To Christ's left, behind the cross, another henchman who has just come out with a stick in his hand to beat Christ. On the right side of the picture, Mary dressed in black with her hands folded upwards, her dark eyes fixed on the henchman and Christ. Behind her, with white cloth over her head, Magdalene and to her right, in red robe, John. Painting in predominantly beige-brown colouring, with the faces particularly brightened and the different gestures of the sitter' s hands emphasized. Scipione Pulzone il Gaetano, an Italian painter of Mannerism, has repeated the present motif in various sizes in his paintings. (1210396) (18)
